History
Origin
of the project
During
the 50', the SNCF had important needs for a renewal of his rolling stock,
especially regarding local and express passenger trains. More than
1500 outdated cars with wood body were still in use. Amongst them, several
series inherited from the former private companies had reusable chassis
and bogies. It was thus magined to build a new body on this framework,
allowing a much less costly construction. That is the way the old car type
C10 Ty, delivered from 1907 to 1923
were rebuilt as the new "Romilly" cars.
More
technical data
This
transformation took place from year 1957 till 1962 at Romilly works. Different
kind of cars were derived from a common scheme:
- unique
body for first class, second class, mixed first/second class and mixed
second class/baggage cars,
- two
wide platforms with double doors.
676 units
were transformed. The speed was left unchanged thus limited to 120 km/h.
Carrier
Those
cars were mainly used in the consist of local and "small express" trains.
They were to be found almost everywhere in France, except on the riviera.
There remaine din use till the middle of the 80'.
